Pupo, the protagonist of a long interview with ‘Today is another day’, the Rai1 program, hosted by Serena Bortone, revealed that 88-year-old mother Irene is ill with Alzheimer’s:
Now I am moved by the new life of my mother touched by senile dementia. Today we have a wonderful, totally new relationship. My mum has never been so affectionate, so sweet, so tender as now in her new lightness. I have the character of my mother … but also of my father who is the true family artist with a very particular character.
The Tuscan singer-songwriter, fresh from his experience as a commentator of the ‘Big Brother Vip 5’, was moved by retracing the sweetest memories of his mother:
They wanted me to get a degree. My father wanted me to be a lawyer. I left the scientific high school to play. Then, I also did the military in advance. My mom wasn’t very happy. I wanted to do everything immediately. At the time it could have been done. I went back for an inch (laughs, ndb). They wanted me to graduate and do another job. From my mom, who were all musicians, I followed that line. Eventually they caved. They were proud of me. In 1975, I recorded my first album, it was called ‘Ti scriverò. He did not immediately make a great success in Italy but got off to a good start in Italy. In a few years, my life was turned upside down by the popularity that invaded my life. In 1980 I was a billionaire.
The interpreter, of successful hits like ‘About us’ and ‘Chocolate ice cream’, also revealed the type of bond with the most important woman of his life after discovering the disease:
Now my mom, every time she sees, looks at a star. Her gaze lights up. He comes towards me and says: ‘My little town’. Then he turns and walks away. He repeats: ‘But who is your father?’. It comes back and it looks like it is there again. She does it with a lightness, with a love. He kisses me like he never did. It was a non-loving mom. But he dedicated his whole life to the family. I never questioned my mom’s love. I am very conditioned by its history. I’m her in the masculine. We are equal in everything, in the voice, in the sentimental experience, in the hardness of looking reality in the face without any kind of filter, in the lack of elimination of problems. I am completely insensitive to success but I remember well the moments in which I reacted but also when I did not give up.
